With the 2010 celebration in Hopkinton, MA of the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon – a battle for freedom that included the very first marathon – the “Go the Distance” patch was born.

Girl Scouts in Hopkinton – the starting place of the Boston Marathon – sought to explore similarities and differences between Hopkinton and its sister city, Marathon, Greece, by learning to sing the Greek National anthem, sharing tea with Greek dignitaries, and reaching out as pen pals to Girl Scout troops in Greece.

As no specific patch existed in honor of the relationship between Hopkinton and Marathon at the time, Tim Kilduff and Nancy Burdick, a troop leader in Hopkinton, began brainstorming ideas for creating a patch that Girl Scouts everywhere could earn.

Given the magnitude of the task at hand, Burdick put the idea out to the Hopkinton Girl Scouts and their leaders. Ultimately, five scouts from troop 73791 – Avery McKenna, Emma Galeucia, Amanda Rogers, Sara Freidman, and Chloe Smith – volunteered to sign on for the commitment. These girls not only designed the patch itself, but also developed the criteria necessary for earning it.

This patch can be earned by Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts across the globe. Acquiring this patch requires achievement in three areas - DISCOVER, CONNECT, and TAKE ACTION – designed to inspire Girl Scouts to learn about what it takes to train for and complete a marathon.
