Commissioned by New Balance, coordinated by the Hopkinton Athletic Association (the former name of the 26.2 Foundation), sculpted by Mico Kaufman, and unveiled in 2006, ‘Spirit’ depicts Greek marathoner Stylianos Kyriakides, who represents one of the Boston Marathon’s greatest underdog stories. Kyriakides won the 50th Boston Marathon in 1946 against all odds, having survived the horrors and deprivations of the Axis occupation of WWII Greece. He then turned his achievement into an opportunity to highlight the plight of his nation, which was still starving and rebuilding from the war. He returned home to a hero’s welcome with boatloads of food, medicine, clothing and other essentials donated by the American people. As a result of those efforts, he is considered by many to be the first Boston Marathon ‘charity’ runner. Flanking him in the sculpture is a fellow Greek, Spyridon Louis, winner of the first modern Olympic marathon, held in Athens Greece in 1896, showing Kyriakides the way forward. Brown was a Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) stalwart and the legendary starter of the Boston Marathon from 1905 to 1937. ‘The Starter’, a bronze sculpture now standing on Hopkinton Common at the Marathon starting line, recognizes and honors his role in the race and his influence on athletics both locally and internationally. A lifetime resident of Hopkinton, Brown began his career in 1899 as an athletics instructor at Harvard. He began working for the B.A.A. in 1900, and managed the B.A.A. Games from 1905 to 1921. In addition to his role as the Boston Marathon starter, Brown managed the U.S. Olympic teams for Stockholm in 1912, Antwerp in 1920, Paris in 1925 and Amsterdam in 1928. He played a pivotal role in the development of hockey in the U.S., served as the manager and director of the New Boston Arena (later known as Boston Garden), and directed athletics at Boston University from 1918 to 1925. For his contributions to the sport, he was inducted into both the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. A member of his family has started the race each year since his death in 1937, a tradition that continues today. Commissioned by the 26.2 Foundation through a state grant and sculpted by local artist Michael Alfano, ‘The Starter’ was unveiled in 2008. https://www.26-2.org/yes-you-can daily 0.75 2025-04-23 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63344948466ec718d3524d4e/228e2d65-6b0d-4b4e-ac7a-d4fca77503de/Yes+You+Can_Hoyt_1.jpg Yes You Can - ‘Yes, you can!’ Dick and Rick Hoyt In 1977, after Rick Hoyt, a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy, asked his dad to push him in a local 5-mile race to benefit a paralyzed classmate, he told his father – through the aid of a computer – “Dad, when we were running, it felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore.” Dick Hoyt subsequently pushed his son through 32 Boston Marathons and numerous other endurance events, including no fewer than four Ironman Triathlons in Hawaii. In 1989 they founded the Hoyt Foundation to help children with disabilities participate in sports, and Dick traveled the world raising awareness about disability inclusion. Team Hoyt became a Boston Marathon icon and a global marathon legend. To recognize their achievements and contributions to marathoning and inclusion, John Hancock Financial commissioned artist Mike Tabor to create the life-sized sculpture, entitled ‘Yes, you can!’. The statue was completed in early 2013 and gifted by John Hancock to the town of Hopkinton, where it is installed on the front lawn of Hopkinton’s Center School.
